Designing in the Halftones (8S)
Instructor: Janet Dawson
Location: Cape Breton Centre for Craft and Design, Sydney
Date: November 8 – 10, 2024
Time: 9am – 4pm all three days
Cost: Early Bird $295 After August 1 $325
$100 deposit due on registration, balance due October 1
Special Offer: Register by June 8 and have your name entered in a draw for a $50 discount.
The overshot most weavers are familiar with has four blocks on four shafts, which confers lots of design potential in the blocks but zero design options in the halftones. Halftones must appear in certain places, and always look and behave exactly the same way.
By moving overshot’s four blocks to eight shafts, a vast array of possibilities opens up for designing in the halftones. On eight shafts, halftones can be left out entirely or they can be placed where they’re wanted. They may appear as pinstripes, as offset pinstripes, as plain weave, and in other formations as well. There are literally millions of options for the halftones in a four block, eight shaft overshot design.
About Janet
Janet learned to weave at the Cape Breton Centre for Craft and Design in 1994 and has been teaching in person and online since 2000. In 2023 she launched the Handweaving Academy, an online school and community for weavers. She’s also known for her Floor Loom Weaving class on Craftsy.com and Zoom weave-alongs on Facebook. She also teaches at guilds, schools, and conferences across the US and Canada. Her classes are so popular that they regularly fill before the topic can even be announced!
