Units, Blocks and Profiles (3 day workshop, Friday Sept 23 - Sunday Sept 25, $210+materials):
There is only one space still available in this workshop but we will keep a waiting list in case anyone has to cancel at the last minute.
This is a great structural design workshop. If you have ever wondered how to create your own designs but didn’t know where to start, this is the workshop for you.
We will take a look at some of the common weaves on 4 shafts: Bronson Lace, Summer and Winter, Overshot, Crackle, Monk’s Belt, etc. These structures all have a very simple multiple-shaft progression, so you will also learn some of the theory necessary to extend them to use on 8 shaft looms. Samples are woven to illustrate many principals regarding ground units and pattern units. Structure analysis is presented in 3 easy steps.
(NB: We expect to have at least four eight shaft looms available for this workshop - and more, if folks can bring them!)
Principles of Colour and Design in Handweaving (1 day workshop, Thursday September 22, $50):
Not everyone is born with an innate sense of colour and design but there are simple techniques and theories that, when followed will help you attain designs that are uniquely yours.
This workshop breaks down the design process into three categories: a) the architecture of the textiles, i.e. the sett and structure; b) the graphic drawing on your textile, i.e. stripes, checks etc; and c) Jane's approach to colour in handweaving . It explores design in a graphic sense and colour as an emotional response.
(NB: our Colour & Design workshop is for all levels and doesn't use the looms, but ASH is now offering this same topic as a three day, at-loom workshop the previous weekend.)
A Taste of Lace (2 hr evening seminar, Thursday September 22, $10):
Laces are a time honoured tradition. The Lace Family Tree includes Canvas Weave, Huck, Swedish Lace, Bronson Spot and Bronson Lace. W hile they look the same they each have distinctive characteristics. If you know what to look for, you'll know which lace you are looking at. In this seminar you will become the Miss Marple of the Lace World identifying "who dunnit".
(This is a seminar that Jane is putting together just for us, because Lacey Places and Units, Blocks and Profile Drafts were in a dead heat for first place when we were deciding on a topic for our three day workshop.)
Sydney Weavers' Guild
The Sydney Weavers' Guild meets from September to May on the second Tuesday of the month at 7:30 pm. Beginning in 2011, meetings in even numbered months (October, December, February, April) will be program only and no business apart from announcements. All weavers, from wannabe to experienced, are more than welcome to join and visitors are always welcome. Dues are $25/year. Benefits of membership include early registration to guild organized workshops and classes, and access to the guild library. The Sydney Weavers' Guild library holdings are visible to everyone. You can find them on this website or on LibraryThing.com.
NB: Our June gathering is a potluck picnic to which all weavers on the island are invited! The date and time for 2011 will be listed here and on the events calendar once it's decided upon. Contact the guild for directions to the location.
